Quote of the Day

Bolsheviks suppress the free contact of Russia with the West and try to steal and to entice the soul of Russian people by the temptation of zoological pseudo-patriotism and misanthropic chauvinism. The very same Russian people who have wearied, languishing in chains of bolshevism, waiting for freedom to build its nation and whose greatest national sanctuaries were desecrated and often destroyed by the Bolsheviks.

The Computer Security Institute (CSI), which conducts an annual Computer Crime and Security Survey with the participation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Computer Intrusion Squad in San Francisco, has reported in its 2001 survey that the losses of 186 respondents totaled approximately $378 million. These losses are based on serious computer security breaches detected primarily by large corporations, government agencies, and universities. Security breaches detected by respondents include a diverse array of attacks such as: unauthorized access by insiders, denial of service attacks, system penetration by outsiders, theft of proprietary information, financial fraud, and sabotage of data and networks. Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are particularly vulnerable when they use the Internet to monitor and control processes at remote sites. Such a practice is employed in a wide variety of industries including chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, food processing, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, water and wastewater, transportation, energy management, and other manufacturing applications.

This Day in History:

The famous author Yuri Alesha was born on this date in 1899.

"Exploring the principles of composition and the struggle of the writer to find a place in the new society, Olesha's work powerfully dramatized the dilemma of the literary intelligentsia in a society that increasingly regarded creative independence with suspicion. If his work represents the epitome of fellow-traveller poetics, then his critical reception in Russia also reveals the attitude of officialdom towards those writers."  (Source)

Sochi

"Sochi is a multicultural city of 400,000 inhabitants representing more than 100 nationalities. Often referred to as the 'Russian Riviera', Sochi has a rich heritage as the nation’s major Black Sea port city, resort destination and a prominent cultural centre. Sochi is a treasure among winter sport enthusiasts, who return every year to explore its pristine alpine valleys and skiing trails. Beautiful weather and an abundance of powdery snow are not the only reason to visit Sochi. The area’s endless beaches, national parks, imposing architecture, mineral baths, arts festivals and lively café culture have made the city an elegant haven for artists, executives, families and athletes alike. Located on the coast of the Black Sea, Sochi is in close proximity to both the European and Asian continents and is a convenient gateway to Eurasia. As such, Sochi has hosted a number of regional and European meetings, including the Russia-EU Summit last year."  (

Cultural Tip:

The communal way of life in Russia has deep roots. Peasants and serfs used to live in peasant communities (крестьянская община)  and later the communist regime took it a step further by organizing the rural populace into collective farms (колхоз – коллективное хозяйство). In larger cities, scarce housing forced people to live in communal apartments (коммунакла) with a common hallway and several rooms sharing the same bathroom, one family per room. Public transportation in cities was always overcrowded. Many generations of Russians, living in such close proximity to each other, loved and hated each other, fought and made up, and eventually got used to living so close together. Collectivism penetrated the blood of the nation. This is reflected even in such a simple fact of life as distance between people. Russians stand much closer to each other than Americans or Western Europeans, and very often Americans recoil from Russians who are trying to approach them. In Russia, people don’t have to be close friends to hug and kiss each other upon meeting and parting, hold each other’s hands, touch and pat each other on the back, whereas in the States people who are very close to each other can do that.
